Solis confirmed as Labor Secretary

Los Angeles Times

Excerpts from the Times

By Rebecca Cole

[Editor's Note; Dr. Ralph Pacheco served with newly confirmed U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis on the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1991.]

February 24, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- The Senate confirmed Rep. Hilds Solis (D-El Monte) as Labor Secretary Tuesday, more than two months after President Obama nominated her for the post.

..Her path to confirmation was cleared when Republicans ended plans to invoke a rule that would have forced a filibuster-proof 60 votes for confirmation.

Instead, the Senate held an up-or-down confirmation vote, 80 to 17 [in favor]. All Democrats supported the nominee and they were joined by 24 Republicans.

In 2000 Solis became the first woman to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her work on California legislation for environmental protections in minority communities. The daughter of a Mexican immigrant, Solis was the first in her family to graduate from college, and she was the first Latina elected to the California State Senate in 1994.

WHITTIER PRAYER SUMMIT ~ CALL TO PRAYER

Whittier, CA --

It was less than two weeks ago, I was sitting in the sanctuary at the Salvation Army Facility on Pickering Ave. in Whittier, CA spending an entire day with other believers in praying for the city of Whittier and the Nation ...

There were 16 categories that local ministers led in prayer on throughout the day starting at 7:00 A.M. on Saturday morning Feb. 7, 2009. This gathering of praying Christians mark the "11th Annual Whittier Area Prayer Summit."

Dozens of churches, hundreds of praying Believers, many church leaders and pastors all participated together in a "Unity of Spirit" to lift up the name of Jesus Christ, and to call upon His Holy name to bring healing, deliverance, and salvation to our community of Whittier and the Nation.

The expressions of faith demonstrated during the many periods of pray are to numerous to mention here. However, there was a beautiful anointing and presence of the Living God among His people. Such a sincerity of heart, compassionate prayers, and Holy Unction released throughout the day from a continuum of pastors and others taking the microphone and lifting up their hearts in prayer... A precious sight to see and to experience...

How special it is when the Body of Christ comes together in prayer. Understanding that when God's people humble themselves and seek the Lord, He shall hear them and heal their Land.

God is on the move... He desires to fulfill His Divine Plan and Purposes through His Church. It pleases our Heavenly Father when we seek Him earnestly, corporately expressing our desires to see His Kingdom established here on earth; in and through His saints... How lovely are the feet of those who bring the Good News to our community. Pray!

May the God of all the earth incline His ear to hear our prayers, and may He watch over His Word jealously to perform it... In Jesus Name I pray... Amen.

For more information about the "12th Annual Whittier Area Prayer Summit" scheduled for February 6, 2010. Please contact Pastor Dwight Sullivan at: 562 944 8909 or Dr. Ralph Pacheco at: 562 946 1410

"8 Miracles From God..."

Dr. Pacheco comments on the miraculous birth of 8 children to a woman residing in Whittier California...

Dear Readers:

I wrote to Nadya Suleman this morning. My purpose to reach out to her as a local Whittier Minister, to remind her that she is one of God's children, and that the birth of her 8 children is a miracle from God.

"God is the giver of life, certainly not a fertility doctor in Beverly Hills." To suggest that he was responsible for this miracle is just ludicrous. Granted he may have implanted the embryos into the womb of this woman, he did not create the 'miracle of life.' This work is the sole domain of One greater than any of us... The Almighty Lord God Himself."

There are many who question this woman's motives, "why would a single woman with six children to raise desire more children to raise?" Once we manage to get past the initial surprise of this event... The more important questions about life should surface...

"Lord, your hand was obviously upon this woman for her to bear 8 children who have survived child birth..." "Lord, what are the rest of us to learn from this miracle of yours?" "What are you saying to us, your people?"

We know that all life is precious... There are many woman in this country who have been praying to conceive "one baby." They have tried everything to conceive, including going to fertility doctor's. In some cases they have tried for years to conceive without success even with the fertility doctor's best efforts. What does this say about the whole issue of conception?

"Conception is a miraculous gift from God... Plan and simple."

In millions of cases woman have decided to terminate this gift from God. Abortions are still taking place everyday. When Nadya was informed that she was carrying "8 babies" instead of "1 or 2 babies." What was the moral decision she should have made then? Terminate 6 of them? Which six, and by what method -- random selection?

By Nadya's own admission, she has had this procedure before, in her past experience the implantation of 6 embryos had produced 1 baby, and in one instance 2 babies. I have to believe her when she claims her "surprise" when her doctor advised her of multiple babies.

Was it a case of Divine Intervention or Divine Providence? Could it be anything else?

For those of us who have been following the case of Nadya Suleman, we must ask ourselves, "Lord by what Divine plan and purpose did you select this woman to shock the World with such a miraculous event that we know only you could have performed?"

Yes, regardless of the circumstances or decisions made by this mother leading up to the delivery of these 8 children, clearly God has had His hand in this... We need to search further into our own hearts and discover our own views and beliefs about this event." "What was God thinking?"

Why are we so divided about this mother? We need to examine our own true prejudices and biases, if any, toward this new mother. "Life... All Life... Is a Gift from God." When God created each of us, could one argue that God made a mistake?"

Or, do we agree that it is Divine selection? Lets pray for these precious 8 little lives, and that the God of all creation will sustain them through all of the controversy that surrounds their grand appearance into this world. And, for the mother who intends to raise to be good citizens. They are the newest residence in Whittier. ... "May we receive them with open arms, and not a clenched fist..."

A HEART WARMING STORY...

Hi Dr. Pacheco,

My nephew was so very touched and surprised when I gave him the gift card! I sat with him and his father and I looked at him straight in the eye and told him the story of how I had met you and what a leader you were in the community and that I shared a story about us doing homework. He listened so intenetly as I related this story. Then I presented him the gift card and told him that you believed in him and his future potential and that books and reading were very important. I told him that one day he would become a leader like us. He was touched and very politely said Thank you. He looked over at his Dad and asked him, "Dad when are you taking me to the bookstore, so I can get books with this?" My brother was speechless and I could see tears welling [up] in his eyes. I know it was a huge thing for them. Thank you!

This morning I was driving out to a morning meeting and I ran into Betito and his mom, walking out of the house on their way to school, he proudly said, "Tia [Aunt], I got a superstar yesterday and today I'm going to work on getting another one" I was thrilled to see him so enthusiastic about going to school! He is only in kindergarten. I just imagine how great he is going to be, as he gets older and I hope he continues to love school as much as he does now! The [gift] card made a real big connection with him I could tell just by the way he spoke to me this morning.

Thanks a million!

God works wonders!

BUDGET BOMBSHELL ~ Governor boosts deficit forecast to $20 billion as he bids to change State's spending system

Sacramento, CA

Article by: Matthew Yi, San Francisco Chronicle, April 30, 2008
Sacramento Bureau

Excerpt;

"In a startling revelation, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said this week that the state's budget deficit could grow to as much as $20 billion as he prepared to unveil a revised spending plan for the coming year that is likely to include deep cuts in education, health services and prisons.

The new deficit figure - 30 percent higher than the latest estimates by lawmakers - reflects a deepening fiscal crisis that has polarized the budget debate in the Legislature as Republicans vow to fight tax increases and Democrats say they won't settle for cuts alone..."
